The hike % illusion
HR quotes hikes on CTC, but you spend in-hand rupees. Because income tax is progressive, every extra rupee of a hike is taxed at your highest slab, so the in-hand growth is always smaller than the CTC growth once you're past the tax-free zone. The effect is sharpest around the ₹12.75 lakh gross mark in the new regime, where the Section 87A rebate disappears and tax jumps from zero.
Rule of thumb for negotiations: ask what the fixed component of the new CTC is, compute the in-hand for both offers, and negotiate on the monthly difference. A bigger headline with heavy variable pay is a worse deal than a smaller, mostly-fixed one.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my hike percentage?
Hike % = (New CTC − Old CTC) ÷ Old CTC × 100. Example: moving from ₹10,00,000 to ₹13,00,000 is a 30% hike. This calculator also works in reverse: enter a hike % to get the new CTC.
Why does a 30% CTC hike not mean 30% more in-hand salary?
Because tax is progressive: the extra income lands in your highest slab, and crossing thresholds (like the ₹12L 87A rebate limit in the new regime) can change your entire tax picture. A 30% CTC hike often becomes a 22–28% in-hand increase, and this calculator shows the exact monthly difference.
What is a good salary hike when switching jobs in India?
Job switchers typically command 25–40% (higher for in-demand skills or 3+ years in the same role), while annual appraisals average 8–12%. Always negotiate on in-hand or fixed pay, not CTC: a "40% hike" loaded with variable pay and gratuity can be a 20% real increase.
Should I compare offers on CTC or in-hand salary?
In-hand, always. Two offers with identical CTC can differ by ₹10,000+ per month depending on basic %, variable pay, employer PF treatment and gratuity inclusion. Run both offers through the in-hand salary calculator before deciding.
